Ingredients
- 2 c flour
- 1.5 c sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1 egg
- 1 c red wine (or more, for stronger flavor)
- up to 1 c milk
- 1 star anise
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 2.5 cups powdered sugar
- grated orange peel
Instructions
- Heat red wine with star anise over stove for about one hour, until significantly reduced.
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- Spray two donut pans (6 each, for a total of 12 donuts) with cooking spray.
- In a mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves).
- Combine reduced wine with milk, for a total combined volume of 1 cup.
- Combine wet ingredients (milk and wine mixture, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract), then mix into dry ingredients. The batter should be fairly thick.
- Spoon batter into greased donut pans.
- Bake 17 min, until a toothpick comes out clean.
- While donuts are baking, make the glaze. Whisk powdered sugar and orange juice together.
- After taking donuts out of the oven, let sit in pans for 5 min before transferring to wire rack. When they are cool enough to touch, but still warm, spoon glaze onto donuts, letting it melt a little and drip over the side of donuts. Finally, sprinkle grated zest of one orange over the donuts.
